TinyUrl

Post by MTP »

Okay, this is maybe for slightly more advanced posting, but for those that want to either post or embed in your post links and then find that you can't because of the URL breaking down in the post; try TinyURL: www.tinyurl.com - it won't work all of the time, however, something like this: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&sourc ... =UTF8&z=16 turn into this: http://tinyurl.com/c2jdlb

Making it much easier to post or embed.

My Defence Heavies (mostly Zone Alarm) refuse to let me enter the Tinyurl world.
I wish I could at times.
Any ideas without opening Hell's Gates ?

Try this method then.

Difficult to outline without invoking protocol and hiding it so here goes:
We want to make this:
Zeiss products

We do it by making this:
1url=http://www.meditec.zeiss.com 2Zeissproducts1/url2

Substitute 1 for [
Substitute 2 for ]
Red is your http address
Green is the text you want to say as the link

This might make no sense, but worth a try!

Thanks Specman. I'm afraid it doesn't make sense to me, but that's not unusual. :), isn't that the way to create links?

Like Izo, my computer won't recognise tinyurl addresses. Is it to do with the firewall? I have no problems with zonealarm otherwise :?

Here is the code (but I lose the nice colouring)

We want to make this:
Zeiss products

We do it by making this:

Code: Select all

Zeissproducts
You can see above that we have used the

Code: Select all

tags, but added in after the first url "=http://www.meditec.zeiss.com"

The tiny URL is more for some really long web links, which may contain characters which mean that the forum code doesn't view the whole web link as the web link, rendering it useless (unless you copy and paste it into a browser).

Okay, this thread contains an example of what I am talking about.

Xavier posts a link which doesn't work, the full URL is:

Code: Select all

http://www.ophsource.org/periodicals/ophtha/article/S0161-6420(02)01167-3/abstract
And it appears like this:

http://www.ophsource.org/periodicals/op ... 3/abstract

Because of the brackets, it is cut short and therefore doesn't work.

Squirt it through TinyURL and you get this: http://tinyurl.com/cxzzr3 which does work.

The whole embedding it behind other words is a separate issue, but if the original link doesn't work, embedding it doesn't either. Otherwise you would get:

This, I mean, yeuch!

Where as this is nice!
