help on how to use the forum

Post by theOptom » Thu Nov 10, 2005 1:33 am

As you may have noticed, the forum has quite a few features you can use when posting. Some are not obvious to a beginner, just like they were not obvious to me at first!

To quote someone.
Click on the 'quote' button, found at the top right of the message you want to quote. It then opens up a reply post with the quote. You dont have to quote all of it, simply delete whatever part you want.

--------

If anyone else has any Qs about the other functions, just post them here.

How to upload your own "avatar" (picture).

You may have noticed that some others and I have a pic next to our names (on the left of the post), which is known as an "avatar".

If you want to personalise your profile and add an avatar, just sign-in, click on "profile" above, scroll down to the box titled "avatar control panel" and it will explain how to go about it.

the avatar pic has a size limit, which is clearly stated on the upload section.

90 pixels by 90 pixels

AND no greater than 7kb

How to view new posts since your last visit.

Although this might sound obvious, some people I know have used this type of forum and not noticed this before.

When you sign in, near the top left there should be a "quick links" icon, click on new posts and it will take you to the posts that have been made since you last visited.

I use it all the time.

How to display pictures in posts:

Use free sites such as:
www.postimage.org
www.tinypic.com
www.freeimagehosting.net

Once you upload your pic, these sites will display the code you need to show the pic in the forum, just cut&paste it.

Personal messages remain in outbox until read by recipient, then get moved to sentbox.

Update on how to display pictures in posts.

While the above methods are still valid for displaying images in posts ... there is another alternative! Use theOptom.com Eye Pics.

If you look up to the top right of the screen you will see the Eye Pics logo, Image.

For a guide on how to use Eye Pics and how to embed the images into your posts, please see this thread.

Why is it good to do this?

It will create a resource of a gallery of images created primarily by and for the users of this site. It will also mean that long after a thread sinks down the rankings on the forum and perhaps hidden from view, the images will be much quicker to flick through looking at interesting eye stuff!

How to log on with form filler (eg RoboForm). Used to work - now says 'No'' :(

(Oops - very ancient thread)

You might need to clear your cookies/cache then visit this site again, or remove it from RoboForm perhaps. I assume when you then visit the site afresh and input your info RoboForm will then ask you what you want to do as if you were visiting the site for the first time, e.g. autocomplete etc.
