I am off to Sierra Leone at the end of September to install slit lamps at three Vision Centres and train the staff in their use. I led a VAO team last year where we installed a Vision Centre at Makeni, the fourth largest city in Sierra Leone. The only eyecare in Makeni is one ophthalmic nurse with a broken slit lamp and a Javal-Schiotz tonometer which I think is very rarely used if at all. I left him my Tonopen and promised to raise the money to buy a slit lamp.

If anybody has a Tonopen that they don't use and would like to donate it to the cause I would be more than grateful as would many thousands of Sierra Leoneans. I would be wiling to pay something but I am afraid the well is a little dry after buying the slit lamps. Many thanks.

I've got an old but working AO NCT. Bit heavy and awkward to use.

I've also got a Topcon focimeter... operates on batteries which might be useful.

I did offer a slit lamp once, worth about 500. Was surprised to told that it wasn't required.

Thanks Terry and Wood but at this stage if it doesn't fit in my suitcase it doesn't go.

I am not sure what the official VAO policy is on used equipment but for this project I thought it was better to go for new slit lamps. Although they are not top of the range I think they are more than adequate for the job.

Do you not want the focimeter then?
