Notes about the new site

Post by theOptom » Mon Nov 06, 2017 11:03 pm

We have upgraded to the latest forum software. See important notes below:

1) The old forum data was huge (over 600k messages) so the programmer and I decided to delete personal messages older than 90 days, to speed up the data conversion process. If something was deleted that was very important please contact admin as we still have all the data, so we can retrieve it for you. This facility will be available for 30 days.

2) If you encounter any initial problems you may need to clear your browser cache and cookies, then restart your browser and visit the forum fresh.

3) The biggest advantage is the new site is now optimised for mobile devices making it much easier to navigate. Check it out and let us know what you think.

4) There are now many new options available for members so they can customise things, e.g. their notifications, profile settings etc. Take your time and have a look around

5) If you encounter any problems (or something you don’t like) please let the rest of the forum know and post it here or contact admin. This is important.

6) The forum software is still building its internal index so the site may run slower for a few days.

7) To read unread posts or new posts since last visit, these links are now found under “quick links” top left.

8 ) You can upload your avatar again, or find it in here:

Glad to see theOptom.com up and running again, I thought you'd had a weekend away
Thanks for all the hard work getting it back online

I don't have a mobile device but the new format looks modern, it'll take a bit of getting used to the new layout but it shouldn't be too difficult (even for an old codger like me).

I've kept my same avatar for the moment so as not to cause more confusion :P

8 ) You will need to upload your avatar again, sorry. It's about time you had a face lift anyway
Last time I changed my avatar I was inundated with complaints (okay then - just the one complaint) - apparently everybody loves Roobarb. I daren't risk alienating my adoring public again, but as a half measure I've changed the background colour. It's a risk, I know, but one I'm prepared to take for the good of the forum! It's all for you, theOptom! 8)

I wish. It was more work than ever. I actually tried upgrading the forum earlier in the year but it resulted in numerous errors during the data conversion process, so left it. Hired a programmer to do it for me this time.

There are probably lots of extra options available now. I haven't had a chance to look at much of them, so if you/anyone has any suggestions in terms of things to add for site functionality, let me know (with link ideally).

I'm finding that when i click on any links that are posted it redirects this tab, whereas the old site it would have opened a new one. Is this an issue with my browser or the forum?

Same here. Seems a forum thing. I will look into it.

I normally access the forum via desktop so its easy to open it into a new tab. On a mobile you can also open it in a new tab/window though.

If you want this done by default (no right clicking) you need to make a modification to one of the php forms.

Not a difficult change - I personally wouldn't bother though as with the new software logging out will not make everything read - you can come back and browse, and also, making this change will mean that you need to remake it if a patch changes the file - bit annoying...
