Forum image upload options

Post by theOptom » Sun Aug 25, 2019 1:36 pm

I've personally not found it difficult to upload&insert an image in a forum post (and it could be done via EyePics) but it could be made easier.

There is this extension that could be added:
https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/extension/postimage/

Which allows images to be attached/uploaded directly in a post. I have no experience of using it myself but seems the easiest option. If anyone knows of other extensions that may be better feel free to post a link, e.g. this one.

I definitely think it would help, boss. You're way, way over-estimating the IT abilities of folks.

Plus, if you're hosting the photos it avoids the situation when photos are taken down by random free hosting sites and the, if you're looking for something, and it's in an older thread the whole thing can become meaningless without the image.

The other advantage if the forum hosts images is that it makes it a lot easier to post pics with mobiles, which is how a lot of folk access the forum these days.

It seems there is a question mark over the compatibility of the first one with the latest version of the forum software. Hosting images in house should be ok, which would be option 2 above.

You can now attach pictures directly to posts. :D

See image below for where this option is located. Once uploaded it offers the option of "place inline" which displays it inside your post rather than at the end. It makes little difference. Probably easier not to select this option. You can also add a title (I chose the title 'click to enlarge').
attach1.jpg
It appears as a smaller preview/thumbnail pic which users can then click on to get the full/big picture (only small issue is it loads it in same window, not a new window). Thumbnails can be removed if users want but I thought it might be better rather than the forum automatically loading the full pic.

Is there a limit on the size ? I tried and it said the file was too big. (It was a photo of a goat, nothing very exciting)

Yes the limit is 2MB.

As a side note for everyone, try not to go crazy with the image attachments (i.e. use where relevant) as it just means the data backup file will get huge which means the server will run slower.
