PM etiquette

Post by MTP »

Over the years since becoming a member, when I send a PM, I'll include my first name. I view it more like an email, rather than an anonymous post and, unless it's a whole flame war, just basic courtesy.

This just doesn't seem to be case from some posters who have messaged me over the years (yes, there are some of the fanbase who want a more intimate relationship with the legend that is MTP).

What say we? Should there be a wee bit of courtesy on a professional forum or am I just being a grumpy sod?

Depends ......

on who it is, if your name is distinctive, Archibald, and how neurotic you are.

I think it depends on the nature of the PM and as Eagle says how likely a first name is likely to give away your whole real-life persona...and if you care

I really don't care if people stick to their forum names for all forum activity.

Etiquette generally wouldn't go amiss when PMing.

For example when you are selling something and all you get is "whats ur cheapest price", it doesn't warm you to people.

I tend to use my first name with longer term posters that I feel I know a bit through the forum, but not with newer posters.

I usually sign off with my first name but like Herb says, if it's someone I've no knowledge of might keep more incognito... Not keen on PM's being sent for stuff that either already has or easily could be discussed on the board #Trio #Diamond

Well, my contribution to this debate is, it depends. I have never used my first name in a PM, (No it's not John) not that I have sent PM's to many people (three I think, and they were replies to their PM). I would not want to use my real name. I have received PM's though, some nice, some not so, including abuse/profanities etc via PM's. So, overall I am happier being under the radar.

The only place I go to any length to hide myself is the 11+ forum. That place is brutal.
