Locum Available for Block Bookings

Post by Locolocum » Sat Nov 03, 2018 2:04 pm

Good afternoon all!

I'm an experienced locum who is looking to fill up my diary for the coming months (I like to be organised!). I have lots of experience in both high street practice and independents and to make things as transparent as possible, I'm going to list below how I tend to work!
Testing times: 25 minutes with SOCRATES, Optix, (& other computerised systems) / 30 minutes with paper records
Refraction: Autophoropters (I do not use trial frames unless the odd occasion arises when my patient is unable to reach the phoropter - if you would like to know why, then I can let you know in a PM)
Appointment types: Sight tests (of course), Contact lens fitting and aftercare, DVLA assessments, and MECS appointments (I believe you have to be registered in your local area so this is area dependent!)
Imaging Equipment: I'm conversant with most up-to-date imaging systems, having worked extensively with different OCT machines and also with Daytona Optos, alongside the more traditional fundus cameras available.
Cover: I work in blocks, normally 5-6 days a week, and generally tend to provide a weeks cover initially, to see whether we like working together! For this reason I hesitate to book a longer initial block, because if it isn't the right fit, I do not like to let people down - staff or patients. Generally, depending on where the block is, I may need accommodation provision - if this is something you provide, we can discuss details if you find me acceptable.

I have worked in practice as a resident for most of my career, and am relatively new to locumming, having done so only for the past year or so. I am commercially aware, but my main focus is on patient care and appropriate recommendations. I am not going to recommend new spectacles to patients who have had small changes to their prescription - unless of course their glasses are in a dreadful state, and I do not prescribe tiny prescriptions to children (unless there is a valid clinical reason to do so!). I am aware of appropriate recalls (not the standard 12 months!) and I have high expectations of patient care. This might sound like common sense, but I have encountered people (and practices) who work in a very different way, and have a different mentality - I do not return to these places!

If this sounds like the sort of optometrist cover that you would like, then I would be glad to discuss coming and working in your practice for you. I cannot commit to regular days (at this stage) because I tend to move all over the country with my blocks, though I am finding most cover is needed in Cornwall, Devon, Wales and Norfolk.

Please PM me if you need some cover,

            Many thanks,

Perhaps I am getting this in the wrong context but with my employers hat on I am put off by being dictated to by a potentially highly paid locum who may choose to work and receive monies but only if I pass the necessary requirements. Sorry to be harsh but only being honest.

“because I tend to move all over the country with my blocks,” As an employer I’d want to know why - I’d also only employ someone who could commit to longer times (and if we’re going to be pedantic can spell practice correctly).

Whereas if they'd offered to be completely passive with 20 min tests and an 80+ % conversion rate?

It must be hard to pitch yourself as a locum.

I agree. One pitch to employers would never fit all. This one I disliked. 20 min tests and guaranteed 80% conversations would stand no chance either.

Personally I can't see anything wrong in stipulating what you can offer an employer and what you expect in return - in fact I would say that it was admirable.
It clarifies the relationship and helps avoid unsuitable placements

First time I looked, I thought "bit demanding."

But then I re-read it. It's just long, not unreasonable!

            Hi everyone,

I understand why this would put people off, of course! I like to be as transparent as possible, what I have found when providing cover through some agencies is that I have ended up in places that I am not comfortable working in - I don't work very well with rolling 10-15-20 minute clinics, and I prefer using autophoropters because if I don't, more often than not after a couple of days in practice, despite having carpal tunnel treatment on both of my wrists, unfortunately my fingers start to go numb and eventually painful, which I have been advised by my specialist will probably cause me some more damage in the future.

I am happy to work all over the country at the moment, because I am currently selling my house and intend to move, probably to Devon / Somerset / Cornwall, in the fairly near future, but I am not having much luck with the sale of my house. At present I am happy to work blocks all over the UK while I can. I am hoping to get more work down South, so that when I move, I can establish more regular work.

I do have practices that I regularly work for, and since I have started work as a locum, I can honestly say that the places that I have worked have been very happy with me, and if you would like some feedback, then I am happy to give you the names of the practices I have worked.

I am not trying to dictate to people who hire me how they like their optometrists to work, I am just setting out how I work, and mean no offence. I like to work to the best of my ability and that is what I was trying to get across.

The reason that I pitched here was because I used to be a very active and regular member of this forum, and have great respect for lots of the regular posters - eagle, I have enjoyed your posts for years! I do apologise for being so unappealing!

            Best wishes everyone,

ps: I do try and remain consistent when spelling, sometimes do bugger up. Practise makes perfect!

I cannot say it is unreasonable either just not appealing to me. In my ideal world the employer offers work under certain terms and conditions rather than the reverse.

I wish the locum all the best in finding acceptable work.

Note - having just read your above post mentioning enjoying my previous forum contributions may I just say your ad is marvellous and my comments are bollocks.

eagle I fear you may be being less than sincere in your final note, however all is forgiven. Now if you tell me Humspoff is still active I may positively love you once again!

Spoffie is still active but only in spurts. She likes spurts.
