Got an email saying there was a new pm...when I checked there wasn't one...why would that happen?

No idea, sorry.

Only suggestion I have is double check the date the email message was sent.

I have had a few email notifications that are obviously delayed. eg I had read the latest PMs and logged off, only to find a new notification in my email inbox some time later.
Independence is a state of mind. All else follows.
