was certainly down everytime I checked between 8:30pm ish and 10am ish this morning. Prob checked around 3 times last night and twice this morning and was always off

Do you mean it was down continuously from last night till this morning?
It was down yesterday eve until about midnight when I last checked it - don't know about other times.

Host said it was an unrelated (to the server) network hardware issue which has now been fixed.

Is the like button thing do-able? There are loads of posts that I think that about but it does annoy me and clog up a thread when there's a load of "+1"s

There is a like/+1 type modification but it's not simple so unlikely to be implemented. I'm still looking into the extensions.

Embed media link extension now active (simply paste the link to the youtube/tweet/etc into your post and it will automatically display in your post, as below):
