Why has no-one addressed the elephant in the room. WHY DID IT CRASH AGAIN. I can safely say that the optom.com servers are the only forum servers that have crashed for longer than an hour on me in my entire Internet using life. And sofar THREE TIMES in recent memory.

Re: Another crash
Ah for fuck sake, and I don't give a shit about using profanities, what kind of bloody security............ This forum is obvouusly run on crap servers. Time to bug out, bye all
Re: Another crash
Dude, I think this is a bit harsh. Running this type of forum is not a small undertaking especially when you are not getting paid for it and trying to do it on a shoestring budget. There is next to no advertising to support the cost and I expect there isn't enough funding to use high end servers with huge security features. The fact that it goes down from time to time isn't going to going to cause anyone serious harm. I think you need to just chill out a bit and cut the guy a bit of slack?
Re: Another crash
tronaghan - I find it frustrating also.
We were moved to another server, which also meant changing domain name servers (this is related to how your computer finds this site on the internet). This process usually takes 1-3 days to complete for everyone. If anyone has issues try clearing your browser cache.
It seems to have completed now. There was approx 2 days of lost data.
Whilst researching other web hosts it seems there are pros/cons (e.g. cPanel, frequency of backups, if they help with the migration process or not, one click software installs, eco-friendly etc). Our current host has been carbon neutral since I joined them (which was rarer back then but now more common). I have contacted ecohosting.co.uk which seem pretty good. It's not possible to say what a new service would be like however. I was thinking of conducting a poll so members can choose the host. That way if it goes wrong......
Apologies for any inconvenience caused.
(as a side note, the latest version of this forum software is a little annoying as it does not allow direct backups. Apparently this is for security reasons. It has to be backed up to the server first, then I have to download it, which doubles the server load. Approx site/database backup is 900MB)

Still seems incredibly sluggish. I know that the recommendation for DNS server changes is 1-3 days, in my experience, of late, though, it's rarely more than 12 hours.
The failure rate does seem very high, who is the current host?

The problem is they all can kind of look as good as each other.
