I know we need to protect from hackers, but I got locked out. 1st time in 15 years apart from when on several occasions the site went down.
Maybe it's time I moved on?

Every once in a while there is a surge of hackers/spambots trying to register for the forum hence the security modules are triggered. It can often leading to over blocking of IPs hence the issue you got. I also got it before logging in.

I have cleared the list so should be fine now. (some people may have gotten temporarily logged out of the forum a few mins ago after I did it)

People who do not run forums tend not to appreciate how much bombardment forums get from spambots/hacking attempts etc. It can be hundreds of times daily. We have almost zero spam here due to the security modules we have in place.

Sad indictment of the way the web is constantly being abused I suppose.

Last two days I still sometimes get the "exceeded maximum number of login attempts" when I try to log in. Anyone else?

I had that this morning. It occurs every 3-4 weeks or so.

I guess the hackers are particularly active during lockdowns as I am getting locked out all the time now ?
Can we expect another site crash boss?

Ask your web hosts about CloudFlare, I think this is what it's supposed to prevent but it's over my head.
