Hi Boss
The site seems very slow today.
The site seems very slow today.
I have noticed for a week or three things have slowed, but not more especially tonight.
Nothing like the crashes we had from the previous ISP.
I installed two days ago the latest Update from Microsoft... and then lost all connection for hours.
I traced this to the upgrade not mixing with ZoneAlarm.. so I have had more downloads and deletions from both.. surprising it still works!
SO, smarty computer people, how do I install a repairing upgrade when the previous one has disabled all contact ??

Izo, I had this problem last week, but found I could access the internet by changing the firewall setting from high to medium. Two days later Zonealarm issued an update to fix the problem, have you received it?

Don't quite understand your last question though, I'm afraid

Yes,OB. I rang Virgin and part of the mindless spiele was a recording about the firewall which fixed the problem while I was wating for their boffins to speak to me.
THEN I got the download from ZA.
My last question re-written is.
What the hell good is it sending me a remedy by internet which I cannot access?
I wondered if I might have to resurrect my old modem and dial-up to get back on to get some help.
How is your connection working? All happily up and running otherwise?

So are you using a different computer at the moment?
Have you tried turning off zonealarm completely, (or even uninstall it)? You should then get online unless something else has gone wrong.
Then reload your version from the link above.
Copy your product key somewhere first, in case it asks for it when you reboot.

I am using the one and only PC as of 4 yrs now. I have a spare from the practice but it is too dated to be of any internet use (W98 etc). Next best would be the dialup modem on this PC, but that too is so outdated and I would have to take an renewed connection.
Are we getting to the point where we need two ISP channels?
BT are now talking about optical cable networks; but that will be years off. I could use Sky/phone or lots of others. But why should I have to?
Once I solved the above problem I thought it was settled.
Then today - the same loss of connection occured but intermittendly. I reset the ZA back to intermediate but I don't think that is relevant it was still dropping out.
One gets very wary of downloading even trusted updates. I did this with ZA's previous one in February and my system crashed big time and I have never got it back to its best.
A ZA full update came a day or so ago (since the above) and that should have sorted it out on my PC at least.
However, having had one trojan in my PC I would be very reluctant to go on-line without defence, or even just using Windows's version of firewall.
Virgin wrote to us all saying very heavy downloaders will be put on slow-time because of overload. My stuff has miniscule bandwidth use.

I've had blocks on Virgin recently, and have kept some timings for evidence since I suspect overload at the node.
Some were theOptom related but many others were included.
Around apparently 10.30am the isp lot go for coffee....for 15 mts
Here's me thinking it was all automated!
eg at 4pm I noticed an urgent email was blocked mid morning but I had forgotten to re-send until mid afternoon.
The net cost is trivial but the inconvenience can be far in excess of that.

bit like running through honey at the moment - (less sticky than treacle
).
I lost the site completely at the beginning of the week but had it back the following day.
Probably some pesky microsoft upgrade. Any Mac users out there getting same problems or is it just Windows? I am not using ZoneAlarm so not that.
I am still getting 2 of every notification email......any suggestions? I am not getting duplicates from any other source (other than one friend whose email always has done this to me!)
